The Ancient History of Surinsar & Mansar Lakes
The legendary lakes of Surinsar and Mansar hold immense historical, mythological, and spiritual significance in the Duggar region of Jammu. According to ancient folklore linked to the Mahabharata era, both lakes are believed to be interconnected through underground channels.
Legends narrate that Babruvahana, the son of Arjuna, created Surinsar Lake when he shot an arrow into the earth during a fierce battle. The waters are believed to have emerged again at Mansar Lake, giving rise to the sacred belief that the two lakes are spiritually connected as “Twin Lakes.”
Surinsar Lake
Surrounded by lush green forests and tranquil hills, Surinsar Lake is known for its untouched natural beauty and peaceful environment. The lake attracts migratory birds, travelers, and nature lovers throughout the year and is considered one of the most scenic destinations near Jammu.
Mansar Lake
Mansar Lake is revered as one of the holiest lakes in Jammu & Kashmir. Surrounded by ancient temples dedicated to Sheshnag and local deities, the lake has been an important pilgrimage and cultural destination for centuries. The spiritual aura, rich biodiversity, and panoramic beauty of Mansar make it a jewel of the Shivalik region.
